HOW
YOUR ENTRY FEE IS SPENT
Apart from
the equipment and transportables required at the Pit
Area and Official area at the Start, flushing toilets,
hot/cold showers, bar, marquees, and a food outlet are
all established at Coonantha, 200 kilometres east of
Carnarvon. . As everything has to be transported to
Coonantha, its remoteness adds to the costs of the
event.
The
GasDash is a point to point race rather than a circuit
and this adds to the cost of running the Event in such
matters as fuel for Checkpoint Operators, radio
operators and course vehicles. Because the course covers
such a wide area, radio repeaters are required, a
further impost. Handset to handset communication is
just not possible without these repeaters.
Safety
surveillance is one of the major costs involved in the
conduct of the Gascoyne Dash. A fixed wing plane is
above the course throughout the race. A helicopter is
airborne to inspect possible emergencies and a large
Casevac chopper is on standby. The fuel bill just to
get the casevac chopper on site is around $16,000. It
costs $1300 an hour to operate this casevac chopper and
each year there has been one or more evacuations.
Should there be an accident a doctor attends in the
first instance in a small helicopter and decides if the
big chopper is needed.
Your Entry
Fee includes a Welcome to Competitors Function on
Thursday night after the pre-race briefing, at which a
meal is provided. There is entertainment at the Finish
at the Carnarvon Racecourse (including a live band).
The
Gascoyne Dash gives you the opportunity to share in
$14,000 in prizes.
Apart from
these major costs, the Event has to sustain normal event
management costs such as equipment hire, insurance,
stationery and promotion costs, and a whole range of
administrative costs.
Part
proceeds from the Event are distributed to volunteer
groups that provide services to the Event, such as St
John’s Ambulance, Royal Flying Doctor Service, State
Emergency Service and others.
The Entry
Fee does not cover all these costs. The shortfall is
made up from spectator admission charges, bar sales,
merchandise sales and sponsorship. |
