About Off Road Racing

The WA Beach Buggy Association was the first Off Road Racing club in WA, formed  in 1970. The club was initially established to cater for beach buggy enthusiasts who wanted to go on "runs" together. Soon after, these runs turned into fully fledged race meetings.  Read more about the history of Off Road Racing in Western Australia.

Off Road Racing is controlled by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS).

The Australian Off Road Commission (AORCom) is a national committee appointed by CAMS National Office that controls the direction of the sport nationally.  The States each have a one representative on the Commission.  It requires consensus before changes are made.

The Western Australian Off Road Panel (WAORP) is an advisory panel that makes recommendations to the WA State Council of CAMS for endorsement but these recommendations cannot deviate from the rules set by CAMS. The WAORP is comprised of two representatives from each of four of the five Off Road Racing Clubs in Western Australia.  The WAORP still has to comply with the general rules as set down by CAMS.

In Western Australia short and long course off road racing events of varying status are run, mainly on farms in the wheatbelt.  These events are circuit races.  The Gascoyne Dash run from Bidgemia Station, upper Gascoyne to Carnarvon is a point to point race.

Events are conducted at locations around Western Australia, including Hyden, Brookton, Yealering, Mogumber, Harvey and Carnarvon.

Although highly competitive, the sport of off road racing is very much family oriented and there are several husbands and wives, fathers and sons/daughters and brothers/sisters competing.

Junior racing Members, as young as 12 years, may compete in special Club events enabling them to gain several years experience before tackling the more arduous Open events, which have a minimum age of 17 years.

Off Road Racing events are run under strict racing rules with a strong emphasis on safety. All competitors must obtain a CAMS Licence prior to racing.

All cars undergo scrutineering before being allowed to compete to ensure that they meet the strict safety requirements and off road racing specifications.

There are nine classes of competition, ranging from single seater buggies and two seater buggies to 2WDs and 4WDs.
